Kyiv: There are reports of devastation every day in the war that has been going on between Russia and Ukraine for the last several months. But on Friday news came out which brought a sigh of relief. US President Donald Trump told the world that Russia and Ukraine have agreed to stop fighting for three days. This ceasefire will start from May 9 and will remain in force till May 11. Trump clearly said that he himself spoke directly to the presidents of both the countries and only then did this become possible. This is no small thing because in such a long and bloody conflict, the coming of both sides to one table is considered a big achievement in itself.
The biggest and most important thing about this ceasefire is the release of prisoners of war. Both the countries will release one thousand captured soldiers each. This means that a total of two thousand people who were imprisoned in enemy camps for months will be able to return to their homes. Imagine the condition of those families who were praying for the well-being of their son, brother or husband for so long. There has never been an exchange of prisoners on such a large scale in this entire war. Trump wrote on his platform Truth Social that this step is not just limited to stopping weapons but is also an important beginning in terms of humanitarian aid.
This ceasefire has come at a time when Victory Day is celebrated on 9 May in Russia. This day commemorates the victory of the Soviet Union over Nazi Germany in the Second World War and has deep emotional significance in Russia. Referring to this, Trump said that Ukraine had also made incalculable sacrifices in that great war. Therefore, stopping the war on this special day and releasing the prisoners is not only a political but also a heart-related decision for both the countries.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky also approved the agreement. He posted on Telegram and said that due to America's mediation, Russia has agreed to take this big step. Zelensky called it a victory for humanity and also said that the door to talks will not close here but will continue in the future also.
Trump thanked both Putin and Zelensky and expressed hope that this three-day respite could one day become the foundation for ending this entire war. At present, the eyes of the world are fixed on these three days to see whether the guns really remain silent or not.
