Kuala Lumpur: Former Pakistani ambassador Hussain Haqqani has taken a jab at Pakistan Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif's barrage of praise for Donald Trump. He wrote on the social media platform X, "Pakistan's prime minister is still leading the race to win the gold medal in the Olympics of flattery for Trump."
Haqqani jokingly remarked that if praising Trump were an Olympic sport, Sharif would surely be the winner.
In fact, Shehbaz Sharif had recently praised US President Donald Trump for his "crucial role in establishing global peace." He said that Trump has contributed to bringing stability in the world through many international agreements, especially the Kuala Lumpur Peace Accord.
Sharif wrote on X, "Another historic day for peace and diplomacy! I express my deepest appreciation to President Donald Trump, who saved millions of lives through the Kuala Lumpur Agreement, the Gaza Peace Plan, and efforts to stabilize the Middle East and South Asia."
He also congratulated Cambodia and Thailand on the agreement and praised Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim's “tireless commitment to peace and harmony.”
It's not like that. Even before this, Sharif had openly praised Trump on many occasions. During the Peace Summit held in Egypt, he called Trump a “man of peace." Sharif had even said that Pakistan had once nominated Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize. “I think he is really the most true and worthy candidate for peace because he saved millions of lives by bringing peace to South Asia,” he said.
This taunt of Haqqani quickly went viral on social media. Many users called it a sarcastic but accurate comment. Political analysts in Pakistan say that Sharif's growing admiration for Trump is not only for diplomatic reasons but could also be a part of his efforts to improve relations with America.
This comment of Hussain Haqqani has come at a time when Pakistan's politics is already struggling with internal instability and international pressures. Experts believe that Shahbaz Sharif's increasing inclination towards Trump is actually part of an effort to strengthen relations with America. Given Pakistan's economic condition and need for international support, the Sharif government considers US cooperation important. This is why Prime Minister Sharif is repeatedly praising Trump's policies and diplomatic initiatives.
