Spain: A high-speed train met with an accident in southern Spain on Sunday evening, killing at least 10 people and injuring several passengers. The train going from Malaga to Madrid derailed and reached the nearby track, where it collided with another train coming from the front. After the collision, the coaches ran over each other, and there was chaos near the station.
The accident occurred near the Adamuse railway station near the city of Cordoba. The time of the accident was around 5:40 in the evening. People present at the station said that suddenly there was a loud bang-like sound, after which smoke and screams were heard all around.
According to the railway administration, the train of Iryo Company had derailed due to a technical fault. The train lost its balance and went onto the adjacent line. Another train going from Madrid to Huelva was coming on the same track, due to which there was a head-on collision. Officials have said that the entire matter is being investigated so that the real reason can be revealed.
The condition of many passengers injured in the accident is said to be critical. He has been admitted to local hospitals. Some passengers suffered minor injuries and were given first aid on the spot. Many people are in shock and are trying to contact their families.
As soon as information about the incident was received, police, the fire brigade, and an ambulance reached the spot. The stranded passengers were rescued and the entire area was surrounded. Due to security reasons, all train services were immediately stopped. The rescue operation continued till late at night.
Following the accident, high-speed train services between Madrid and Andalusia have been temporarily suspended. However, trains between some other cities are running normally. The Railway Department has advised passengers to check updates before traveling.
A few days ago, a major train accident took place in Thailand also, in which 22 people died. Continuous such accidents have increased the concern regarding railway safety.
