The injured were immediately admitted to Negombo Government Hospital, where many are in critical condition. Initial investigation has revealed that the dispute started between two rival drug gangs, which soon took the form of a jail riot.
According to the police, there was an altercation between two rival groups related to the drug mafia lodged inside the jail on Sunday night. Within some time the dispute turned into a violent clash and both sides attacked each other. The situation became so bad that the jail administration had to call additional security forces to control the situation.
Negombo Government Hospital Director Pushpa Gamlath said that a large number of injured have been brought to the hospital. Many people have suffered serious injuries from bullets as well as sharp weapons. The team of doctors is continuously treating the injured and the condition of many still remains critical.
According to local media reports, Negombo Prison has been struggling with the problem of overcrowding for a long time. It is believed that overcrowding and gang activities further instigated this violence. The administration is now investigating the entire matter to find out where the lapse occurred in the security arrangements.
The jail administration and police have started investigating the incident. Officials say a detailed investigation is being conducted into the reasons for the violence and strict action will be taken against the culprits. At present, additional security forces have been deployed in the jail premises so that the situation does not deteriorate again.
According to reports, it is believed to be the deadliest prison violence in Sri Lanka in the last five years. Due to the large number of deaths and injuries, concern about this incident has increased throughout the country. The government has indicated a high-level inquiry into the matter and the jail security system may also be reviewed to prevent such incidents in future.
