International News: A devastating suicide bombing rocked the Syrian capital Damascus on Sunday, targeting one of the city’s major Christian religious sites. The explosion occurred during a prayer service at Mar Elias Church in the Dwella district, killing at least 15 worshippers and leaving 13 others critically injured.
This attack has sent shockwaves across the region and beyond, especially as Dwella had long been considered one of the most secure areas in the capital. Syrian state media condemned the incident as a cowardly act of terrorism, although no group initially claimed responsibility.
Later in the day, Syria’s Ministry of Interior confirmed that the assault was carried out by a suicide bomber affiliated with the Islamic State (ISIS). Security sources reported that the attacker entered the church during mass, opened fire on the congregation, and then detonated an explosive device, causing widespread devastation within the premises.
Worshippers, unaware of the impending danger, were caught completely off guard. The powerful blast created immediate panic, with screams and confusion engulfing the scene. Emergency responders rushed the injured to nearby hospitals, while security forces quickly cordoned off the area. Investigative agencies are now working to uncover the broader plot and identify potential accomplices.
Syria’s Minister of Information, Dr. Hamza al-Mustafa, issued a strong statement condemning the assault. “This cowardly act stands in direct opposition to our civic values and principles of brotherhood,” he said. “Syrian society is built on unity and peaceful coexistence among all communities. Such acts will not divide us.” He also extended condolences to the victims’ families and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to preventing similar attacks in the future.
Experts and regional observers have expressed deep concern over the deliberate targeting of religious institutions, warning that such actions are part of a broader attempt to destabilize Syria. Groups like ISIS are known to incite sectarian tension by attacking minority communities, aiming to disrupt the fragile balance in post-conflict regions.
