International News: Tensions are constantly increasing on the border between Thailand and Cambodia. So far 16 people have lost their lives in the recent conflict between the two countries, most of whom are said to be Thai citizens. Meanwhile, Thailand has made it clear that it will not accept the mediation of any third country and is in favor of resolving the dispute only through bilateral talks.
The United States, China, and current ASEAN chair Malaysia had offered mediation, but Thailand rejected it, saying Cambodia must first stop violence on the border. Thai Foreign Ministry spokesman Nikorndech Balankura gave information about this.
There has been heavy firing and shelling in the border areas between Thailand and Cambodia for the last two days. Both sides have accused each other of starting the conflict. This conflict started in the disputed area, where there has been tension between the two countries over sovereignty for years. This conflict, which started on Thursday, took a more violent turn on Friday. This is considered to be the most severe violence between the two countries in the last decade.
Thailand's Foreign Ministry spokesman Nikorndech Balankura told the media, "I don't think we need mediation from any third country right now." He further said, "We maintain our stance that the bilateral mechanism is the best way. This is a matter between only two countries." However, he also added that if ASEAN helps in restarting the talks, it is welcome.
Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet on Thursday appealed to the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) to call a meeting on this issue. He accused Thailand of unprovoked and pre-planned military aggression. The UNSC has decided to hold a closed-door discussion in this regard on Friday. The Cambodian government has not yet given any official response on this issue.
This dispute has also jolted the diplomatic relations between the two countries. On Wednesday, Thailand recalled its ambassador from Phnom Penh and expelled the Cambodian ambassador from the country. Thai officials allege that Cambodia recently laid landmines on the border, which injured Thai soldiers. Cambodia has called these allegations baseless.
The current ASEAN chairman and Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim spoke to the leaders of both countries on Thursday and appealed for peace and dialogue. He said that an immediate solution is necessary for regional stability.
