International News: On the 36th anniversary of China's Tiananmen Square Massacre, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has issued a strong statement. "The world will never forget what happened on June 4," he said. His statement was in memory of the thousands of students who were martyred in 1989 in support of democracy and freedom of expression.
In his statement, Rubio clearly accused China of hiding history and censoring the truth. He said that China has been trying to erase the tragedy of Tiananmen Square for years, but the world will not let this historical injustice be forgotten.
Secretary of State Rubio not only paid tribute to the students who died in 1989, but also saluted the struggle of activists fighting for human rights and freedom of expression in China today.
Reacting sharply to the American statement, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian said that Rubio's statement is serious interference in China's internal affairs. He alleged that this is a conspiracy to deliberately distort historical facts and China strongly opposes it.
Lin Jian also made it clear that China's policy on the Tiananmen Square incident is very clear — "The only option is to forget it."
It is worth noting that on June 4, 1989, the most horrific democracy-violence incident in history took place at Tiananmen Square. After the death of Hu Yaobang, the liberal leader of the Communist Party, thousands of students gathered at this historic square in the capital Beijing to demand democracy. But on the night between 3 and 4 June, the Chinese army opened fire on these unarmed protesters and crushed them with tanks.
Although official figures have not been made public to date, according to independent reports and witnesses, around 3,000 people were killed in the massacre. Since then, China has made every effort to suppress the whole affair—it is not mentioned in schools, nor in the media, nor is public remembrance allowed.
The victims of the Tiananmen massacre are remembered every year on June 4 in America and many western countries. This time, the statement of America's top diplomat is not only an attempt to highlight the historical truth, but also a support for those voices who are still fighting for freedom of speech and democracy in China.
