Brazil: On Friday evening, a powerful tornado suddenly destroyed almost the entire part of the old city named Rio Bonito do Iguaçu in the Paraná state of southern Brazil. At least six people were killed, and about 750 people were injured in this storm. About 90% of the city's structures were damaged, cars were overturned, and buildings collapsed.
The incident occurred in Rio Bonito do Iguaçu, a town of 14,000 in Paraná state, where winds reached 250 km/h and hail also fell. According to meteorologists, it was caused by a supercell storm that created swirling winds and suddenly caused widespread devastation.
The death toll is said to be at least six, including a 14-year-old girl. About 750 people have been injured. One person is still missing. About 90% of the area is said to be damaged.
Analysts say such a powerful tornado is extremely rare in southern Brazil. This phenomenon occurred when warm and moist air moved in from the north and cold air moved in from the south—this combination created instability in the air and led to the destruction of the supercell storm.
The state government has declared an emergency. Rescue teams, soldiers, fire brigades, and civil defense agencies immediately got into action. Temporary shelters have been built; there, water, medicines, tents, and basic humanitarian aid are being provided to the affected people.
The primary challenge now is the search for people trapped under the debris and the safe disposal of damaged structures. Almost the entire part of the city is damaged, so the reconstruction work is going to be extremely complex.
The Meteorological Department has issued warnings of strong winds and heavy rains for this area; hence, there is a need to further increase preparations.
