New Delhi: Just days before a possible US-Iran deal was expected to be signed, Donald Trump came out swinging. He posted a sharp and aggressive warning to Iran on social media. He accused Iran of cheating, called out a drone attack on Indian ships near the Strait of Hormuz and rejected the deal terms that had been leaked to the media as completely false.
Trump made a stunning claim in his post. He said that the previous night Iran had attempted to target Indian ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz using drones. He said the attack was fully foiled. But he made clear that such acts will not be tolerated. He said attacks on Indian ships are unacceptable and Iran must change its behaviour fast. His tone left no room for ambiguity.
Earlier, Iranian state media had published what it claimed were the terms of the upcoming deal. Iran said it would not give up control of the Strait of Hormuz even under the agreement. Trump rejected all of it outright. He said the conditions Iran leaked to the media have nothing to do with what has actually been agreed in writing. He called Iran's statements weak and pathetic and said they were far from the truth. He described Iran's approach as shameful.
Trump did not stop there. He went after Iran's entire diplomatic conduct. He said Iran is deeply deceptive and honesty has no place in any negotiation with Tehran. He said dealing with Iran requires constant vigilance because they play games at every step.
The dispute over the leaked terms has made things complicated. Iran's state media claimed the deal gives Tehran more than it gives Washington. Trump's furious response has made it clear that before the Sunday signing even happens, the diplomatic fight between the two countries has turned far more aggressive. Whether the deal survives this latest round of accusations remains to be seen.
