Washington: US President Donald Trump's plane, Air Force One, had left for the World Economic Forum event in Davos, Switzerland on Tuesday, but it suddenly returned. The aircraft landed safely back at Joint Base Andrews, Maryland, shortly after takeoff. The incident occurred when the flight crew detected a minor electrical problem during the flight and was immediately diverted for safety reasons.

Why did the plane have to return?

Disturbances in lighting and other electrical signals were detected in the cabin of Air Force One shortly after takeoff. White House press secretary Caroline Leavitt said the crew decided to return the plane immediately due to safety concerns. No passengers or crew were injured and the aircraft returned safely.

Was the problem serious?

The official statement described this as not a major problem and referred to a "minor electrical problem" at the time of the conversion. However, this was not taken lightly and the team including the captain immediately decided not to continue the further flight with the same aircraft. After this, Trump and his team boarded a separate plane and left for Davos.

What impact did this have on Trump's visit?

Due to this technical problem, Trump's Davos program was affected for some time. At Davos, Trump was scheduled to meet with several global leaders and give speeches as part of his program. Although not canceled due to bad weather or other security reasons, his Prime Minister's visit was delayed due to aircraft changes and new arrangements.

What came up regarding the aircraft and its age?

The current aircraft of Air Force One have been in service for nearly four decades and are being modernized. The new plane is being manufactured by Boeing, but it too has faced snags and delays. It is also worth noting that the reliability and safety of the aircraft are of top priority during the President's travel, hence even minor technical glitches are taken seriously.

Has this happened before?

It is not at all uncommon for high-security aircraft to be diverted due to technical reasons. Many times in the history of America, the presidential plane has been seen returning due to such small reasons, but there was no loss to the passengers. This time too, the decision was taken by giving priority to the technical problem and ultimately the journey was continued safely.
