Washington: US President Donald Trump has unveiled a sweeping defence spending plan that would push military outlays to an unprecedented $1.5 trillion in 2027. He says the move is critical to protect the nation in what he calls "very troubled and dangerous times."

What Is Trump's Defence Budget Plan?

Trump’s proposal would raise the defence budget by more than 50 per cent compared with the $901 billion Congress approved for 2026. If lawmakers agree, the $1.5 trillion figure would become the highest in US history.

"I have determined that, for the Good of our Country, especially in these very troubled and dangerous times, our Military Budget for the year 2027 should not be $1 Trillion Dollars, but rather $1.5 Trillion Dollars," Trump said.

In a post on his social platform, Truth Social, the president said the increase would help build what he described as a "Dream Military", a force capable of deterring or defeating any adversary. Trump also claimed that higher tariff revenues would help pay for the expanded budget without squeezing other parts of the government.

Why Is the White House Calling for Such a Big Jump?

The administration says global instability, including rising tensions with major powers and ongoing conflicts, demands a stronger US defence posture. Trump’s comments came on the heels of recent US military action in Venezuela and discussions about broader strategic moves abroad.

Trump and his allies argue that the larger budget would improve readiness, modernise forces, and ensure America remains ahead of rivals. The president has pointed to tariff income as a key funding source, saying it helps free up resources for defence spending.
