New Delhi: United States President Donald Trump has claimed that Pakistan has been carrying out nuclear weapons tests. His revelation came soon after he announced that the United States would restart its own nuclear testing program — the first in more than 30 years. Trump said Pakistan was among several countries actively testing nuclear weapons, adding that such global activities make it necessary for the US to resume testing as well.
According to the news agency, during his interview on CBS News’s 60 Minutes on Sunday, Trump stated that nations like Russia, China, North Korea, and Pakistan have been conducting nuclear tests, while the United States remains the only one not doing so. “Russia’s testing and China’s testing, but they don’t talk about it. We’re an open society. We have to talk about it because otherwise the media will report it,” Trump said. He continued, “We’re going to test because they test, and others test. North Korea has been testing, and Pakistan has been testing too.” Trump made these remarks while responding to a question about his decision to detonate nuclear weapons.
On Thursday, Trump announced that the United States would immediately restart nuclear weapons testing, pointing to Russia’s recent experiments with advanced nuclear systems. The move marks a serious escalation between Washington and Moscow. “You need to know how these weapons work,” Trump explained. “Russia is testing, North Korea is testing, and others are testing. We are the only country that doesn’t, and I don’t want that.”
The US President also asserted that America holds “more nuclear weapons than any other country.” He said he had spoken with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping about denuclearisation. “We have enough nuclear weapons to destroy the world 150 times,” Trump remarked. “Russia has many, and China has quite a few as well.”
When asked if restarting nuclear testing could make the world more unstable, Trump replied confidently, “I think we have it pretty well under control.”
