Washington: The ongoing conflict between the United States and Iran has once again reached a dangerous turning point. President Donald Trump said that the Memorandum of Understanding with Tehran "is over," after the US and Iran exchanged strikes across the Middle East.
US President Donald Trump has declared in clear terms that the ceasefire with Iran is now over. Speaking to reporters during the NATO summit in Turkey, Trump accused Iran of reneging on the agreement and said that negotiating with Tehran now is a waste of time.
“For me, I think it’s over,” Trump responded when asked about the status of ceasefire.
Trump's remark come hours after the US launched fresh strikes against Iran in response to Tehran targeting three commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz.
"They are scum. They are sick people. They are vicious, violent people. If they had a nuclear weapon they'd use it," Trump said.
While speaking to the reporters, Donald Trump said, "I think the agreement with Iran is over now. Negotiating with them is just a waste of time." He launched a scathing attack on Iran, saying that Tehran has not honored the terms of the agreement.
President Trump said they were liars. "We had an agreement. Everyone agreed on it. It was clearly agreed that there would be no nuclear weapons. But after the agreement, they went out and told the media that we never discussed this issue. There's something wrong with them. They're completely crazy."
Trump's statement comes at a time of renewed tensions in the Gulf region. Iran has claimed that it has targeted 85 US military bases in retaliation for US attacks on its Hormozgan province and Mahshahr port.
Following the Iranian claims, the entire Gulf region was put on high alert. Air raid warning sirens sounded in Bahrain and Kuwait, causing panic among the public. Security systems in both countries were immediately activated.
The US and Iran recently reached a temporary agreement to prevent conflict and advance negotiations on several contentious issues, including the nuclear program. However, Trump's latest statement makes it clear that Washington considers this agreement to be over.
