International News: US President Donald Trump has said that imposing tariffs on India was not an easy decision, as it creates tension in the relations between the two countries. Trump made it clear that imposing 50% tariffs on India for buying oil from Russia was a big step for him. Trump said in an interview on Friday, "Look, India was Russia's biggest customer.
I put a 50 percent tariff on India because they were buying oil from Russia. This is not an easy task. This is a big step and it creates a rift in relations with India." Trump further said, "But I did it. I did a lot. And remember, this is Europe's problem, not ours."
US President Donald Trump claimed that he ended several major global conflicts during his second term. Trump said, "I resolved seven wars. I did a lot of things, including the case of Pakistan and India. But I also resolved big wars that were considered impossible like Congo and Rwanda. This was going on for 31 years, millions of people died. I resolved wars that no one could solve."
Meanwhile, India has repeatedly made it clear that its purchase of Russian crude oil is based on national interest and market needs. India says that ensuring energy security is its priority. Trump's next ambassador to India, Sergio Gor, said on Thursday that the Trump administration wants India to buy American crude oil and petroleum products. He said, "India's huge middle class market is bigger than America's. Trade talks are going on in this direction."
US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick also indicated that a trade deal with India would only move forward if New Delhi stops importing Russian oil. Speaking to CNBC, he said, "We will sort out India. But progress will only happen if India stops buying oil from Russia."
