Washington: US President Donald Trump has reportedly written a letter to Norway's Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Store to complain about not winning the Nobel Peace Prize and said he no longer felt "obligated to think purely of peace".
The US President in a message to Norwegian Prime Minister said, "Dear Jonas: Considering your Country decided not to give me the Nobel Peace Prize for having stopped 8 Wars PLUS, I no longer feel an obligation to think purely of Peace, although it will always be predominant, but can now think about what is good and proper for the United States of America."
Trump also called on NATO allies to do more for the United States, asserting that he has done more for the alliance than anyone since its founding.
"Denmark cannot protect that land from Russia or China, and why do they have a 'right of ownership' anyway? There are no written documents, it’s only that a boat landed there hundreds of years ago, but we had boats landing there, also. I have done more for NATO than any other person since its founding, and now, NATO should do something for the United States. The World is not secure unless we have Complete and Total Control of Greenland. Thank you! President DJT," he further wrote.
Reacting to the letter, Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas said that "Trump’s message came in response to a short text message to President Trump from me earlier in the day, on behalf of myself and the President of Finland, Alexander Stubb."
"I have clearly explained, including to president Trump what is well known, the prize is awarded by an independent Nobel Committee," Store said.
Critically, the Nobel Peace Prize is not awarded by Norway’s government but by an independent committee. Store's office reiterated this point in response to Trump’s letter, saying it had explained the process to the president.
So far, the Nobel Committee has not commented directly on Trump’s letter.
