New Delhi: The world is watching the upcoming meeting between US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping in Busan, South Korea. This meeting comes at a time of heightened trade tensions and tariff disputes between the two countries. This meeting, taking place after six years, is expected to provide a new direction for US-China relations.
New tariff measures and China's retaliatory actions during Trump's second term have strained relations between the two countries. However, both sides are now exploring ways to restore economic cooperation and reduce trade losses. Trump said before the meeting, "We're going to have a very successful meeting. Xi Jinping is a very tough negotiator, but we've always had a good relationship."
The two countries have hinted at a compromise in recent days. The US has indicated it will refrain from imposing a 100 percent additional tax on Chinese imports, while China has considered easing rare earth export limits and resuming purchases of American soybeans.
Trump said he might consider some easing of tariffs on China over its role in fentanyl production, expressing hope that this move would restore trust between the two countries. The meeting between the two leaders will begin at 11 a.m. local time in Busan, about 76 kilometers from Gyeongju, on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit.
Pre-negotiations in Kuala Lumpur saw positive consensus reached between officials from both countries. China's chief trade negotiator, Li Chenggang, said a "preliminary consensus" had been reached, which US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessant described as a very successful roadmap.
Economic experts believe that if the conflict between America and China reduces, the investment environment in Asian markets will improve and export trade will get a boost.Trump announced that the US will provide technical assistance to South Korea in building nuclear-powered submarines, further strengthening the strategic relationship between the two countries.
South Korean President Lee Jae-myung said that if South Korea is equipped with nuclear-powered submarines, it will strengthen regional security and deepen defense cooperation with the US.
This meeting in Busan could prove crucial for the future of US-China relations. Economic cooperation and easing tariff policies between the two countries are expected to stabilize global markets. Experts believe that if the talks are successful, it will also be a positive sign for the Asian economy.
