London: Britain's long-running grooming gangs scandal has once gain triggered outrage after independent MP Rupert Lowe revealed in the Parliament a series of disturbing testimonies from survivors, who described years of horrific sexual abuse at the hands of organised gangs.
During a speech, British MP Rupert Lowe in Parliament read graphic testimonies from survivors and presented findings gathered through his independent inquiry into group-based child sexual exploitation.
Based on his independent investigation, he revealed how innocent victims were subjected to unbearable torture for years, while everyone from the police to the administration turned a blind eye.
The grooming gangs scandal is a decades-long organised crime of sexual exploitation that has emerged in Britain. The grooming gangs were first exposed in 2003 and have been the subject of investigations since. The scandal primarily involved men of Pakistani and South Asian origin who targeted vulnerable, defenseless, or racially discriminated white British girls aged 11 to 16.
Testimony presented in Parliament by MP Rupert Lowe revealed the extent to which innocent girls were victimized. One victim said in her statement, "I was raped by probably 600 or 700 different men."
Another victim, recalling the horrific incident from her childhood, said, "He took the bottle of Jack Daniels and he forced it up inside me. He broke the glass. I was about 12 or 13."
Another testimony alleged that racial stereotypes were used by abusers: “Comments were constantly made that White Girls had lower values than Muslim girls.”
These statements also revealed that the victims were selected based on their whiteness. One victim stated, "Race DID play a part. Throughout my exploitation. The other girls I encountered or were abused along side me, were almost all exclusively White." The victims alleged that the exploiters often said that white girls had lower moral values than Muslim girls.
“It was all White Girls. In a van. I remember seeing 15-20 girls locked in dog cages”
Furthermore, the girls' religious identity was also attacked. One Christian victim said that when she wore a cross, the accused would mock her, saying, "Where is your God now? Has your God abandoned you?"
The most sensational and serious twist in this case came when the investigation revealed allegations of direct police complicity. In testimony presented to Parliament, one victim stated bluntly, "I was gang-raped by several police officers in different parts of the country."
MP Rupert Lowe launched his own independent inquiry into the matter before the government announced an official statutory national inquiry. His inquiry claims to have found substantial evidence of child sexual exploitation and grooming in dozens of local authority areas across the country.
After the issue resurfaced in Parliament, the UK government established an official National Investigation Team. This team is now conducting an in-depth review of how police forces, local councils, schools and other institutions responded to these serious complaints.
