Ukraine: Several killed as Gunfire erupts in Kyiv, over dozen injured; police confirm hostage situation

Kyiv: In Kyiv, the capital of Ukraine—a nation currently embroiled in a war with Russia—an individual opened fire on people. The incident has resulted in the deaths of approximately two people, while more than a dozen others have sustained injuries. Providing details regarding the event, the Kyiv police stated that the shooting took place in the southern Holosiivskyi district.

Ukraine's Interior Minister, Ihor Klymenko, later confirmed that individuals had been taken hostage inside a supermarket and that the attacker had fired at police officers before being killed. The exact number of fatalities and injuries remains unclear; however, Klitschko stated that at least 12 people—including a child—have been transported to the hospital.

What happened in Kyiv?

In Kyiv, an unidentified man opened fire on passersby and reportedly later detonated an explosive device. The shooting occurred in the Holosiivskyi district, with at least two people killed, including a young woman. Witnesses say the attacker was running through the street and shooting at people at close range. After the shooting, the suspect reportedly took hostages inside a Velmart store. He is believed to be around 60 years old, and his motives remain unclear. A fire also broke out at the scene, possibly caused by an explosion. Police are conducting an operation to detain the suspect, and the number of victims may still change. Videos emerging from the incident spot showed at least 1 woman killed and more casualties feared. Reports say  that security forces have stormed the buidling where the shooter has barricaded himself.

Were Hostages Safely Rescued?

During the attack, the perpetrator had taken several people hostage inside a supermarket. Subsequently, security forces intervened and safely rescued four hostages. According to Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko, the attacker initially entered the supermarket while firing shots in a residential area, where sounds of continuous gunfire were heard.
