Dubai: A new controversy has arisen regarding the recent peace agreement between America and Iran. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Aragchi said on Tuesday that if Israel does not withdraw its troops from southern Lebanon, it will be considered a violation of the agreement. After his statement, many questions have arisen regarding the agreement, the full terms of which have not been made public yet.
In a statement broadcast on Iranian state television, Araghchi said during talks with foreign diplomats that the Israeli military presence in Lebanon does not match the claim of ending the war. He said that for the conflict to be truly over, Israel would have to withdraw from the areas it had established control during the war.
Aragchi's statement indicated that Tehran does not consider this agreement limited only between Iran and America. The Iranian side says that lasting peace in the region is possible only when military activities in Lebanon also stop. However, the US has not yet clarified whether the final agreement includes any conditions related to Lebanon.
Israel has adopted a different stance regarding this agreement. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has said that this agreement has been made between America and Iran and Israel is not a party to its terms. He clarified that for security reasons the Israeli army will remain in the buffer zone created in Lebanon as long as it is considered necessary.
Analysts believe that different interpretations of the terms of the agreement may create new difficulties in the future. Even before this, during the temporary ceasefire, America and Iran had made different claims, due to which many issues were left in limbo. This is the reason why this time also questions are being raised regarding the actual outline of the agreement.
The formal agreement between the US and Iran is likely to be signed in Geneva on Friday. Before that, the difference visible in the statements of both the sides has attracted the attention of the international community. It is believed that final consensus is still yet to be reached on many important points.
If the two sides continue to have different interpretations regarding Lebanon, then hopes of a complete end to tension in the region may be set back. At present, the eyes of the world are on the meeting to be held in Geneva, where it will be clear what are the final terms of the agreement and in which direction the peace process will move forward in West Asia.
