Muscat: Fourteen Indians were rescued in a major maritime operation off the coast of Oman on Sunday. A boat named MSV Virat-1, carrying a 14-member Indian crew, sank approximately 80 nautical miles off Ras Al Hadd, Oman.
Following the incident, a US Navy P-8 maritime patrol aircraft stepped in to assist; it dropped a life raft near the boat and maintained aerial surveillance. The crew members successfully escaped the sinking vessel using the life raft. It remains unclear whether the boat sank due to a mechanical failure or damage caused by another vessel.
After the boat sank, all 14 sailors safely boarded the raft. According to the US Navy, following the maritime emergency, all 14 Indian crew members successfully abandoned the vessel and boarded the life raft. Indian Navy ships have been dispatched to provide assistance after the distress alert was received.
According to ANI, Indian Navy ships have been deployed to the site of the sinking. The MV Jabal Ali 9 (a St. Kitts and Nevis-flagged vessel) is heading towards the sinking boat. Information received from the MV Jabal Ali indicates that all 14 Indians have boarded the life raft. Tensions persist in the waters off Iran and Oman, with several vessels stranded due to the US Navy blockade. Several incidents have occurred off the Omani coast in recent days; Indians have faced difficulties in this region prior to Sunday's sinking as well. India is relieved that there was no loss of life in Sunday's incident.
