Beijing: US President Donald Trump has departed for a two-day visit to China. Although this meeting is scheduled to take place between the leaders of two nations, the eyes of the entire world are fixed upon it. This is because its significance has been heightened by the ongoing conflict in Iran and the trade war. Meanwhile, China has already signaled its stance, drawing four "red lines" before the United States. China asserts that it would be in everyone's best interest if the US refrains from crossing these four red lines during the talks between Trump and Xi Jinping. Should the US fail to observe these boundaries, it would be impossible to maintain good relations with China.

What did the Chinese Embassy say?

The Chinese Embassy in the US issued a tweet regarding this matter, reminding the Trump administration of four key points. The Chinese Embassy wrote: "There are four red lines in China-US relations that must not be challenged. These are: the Taiwan question, issues concerning democracy and human rights, political systems, and China's right to its own development." Subsequently, in another post on X (formerly Twitter), the Chinese Embassy stated that China and the US should strive to establish constructive relations. Furthermore, there should be stability in the relationship between the two nations, particularly at the strategic level.

China has raised the issue of these red lines on previous occasions as well. Xi Jinping met with the then-US President Joe Biden in November 2024. At that time, President Jinping stated that there are four red lines in China's relationship with the US, and that the US must constantly remain mindful not to cross them. It is worth noting that China lays claim to the democratically governed island of Taiwan, regarding it as its own territory under the "One China Policy." China has consistently taken offense at the importance the US accords to Taiwan. Most recently, the US announced plans to supply weapons to Taiwan.

Will China Raise the Taiwan Issue During Meeting with Donald Trump?

It is widely anticipated that this issue may once again be raised by the Chinese side during the upcoming talks between Jinping and Trump. Moreover, China's Ministry of Taiwan Affairs has reiterated this stance once again. Ministry spokesperson Zhang Han stated that Taiwan is an internal affair of China. He asserted that this is a matter concerning the Chinese people, and the United States should have no say in the issue. He further added that they oppose any U.S. initiative to establish relations of any kind with Taiwan, and they firmly object to it.
