Lifestyle News: Diabetes is not a disease of one day, it is a lifestyle. And the biggest weapon to keep this lifestyle balanced is the right diet. When it comes to eating healthy, people blindly consider fruits and vegetables to be reliable. But this trust can sometimes prove to be costly in diabetes.
Not everything green is healthy especially when it comes to blood sugar. There are some vegetables that increase the amount of glucose in the body very fast and can prove to be dangerous for diabetic patients.
Let us know about those vegetables which diabetic patients should either completely avoid or take in very limited quantities:
You may consider potato as the king of all vegetables, but for diabetes it is 'not a king, but an enemy'. The glycemic index of potato is very high and it contains a large amount of starch, which increases blood sugar rapidly as soon as it enters the body.
Caution: A thin slice of boiled potato should be the limit, and that too occasionally.
Sweet corn sounds healthy, but the hidden sweetness in it can be fatal for diabetes patients. It contains high carbs, which get converted directly into glucose in the body.
Prevention: If you have to eat, then eat only one spoon of boiled corn in a week, without salt or butter.
Yam and yam have a special place in the traditional Indian diet, but for diabetic people, these vegetables can become enemies of health. Both of these are high carb foods and their effect is similar to that of potatoes which can rapidly increase in blood sugar.
Warning: Limit them to special occasions, and even then in very small quantities.
What to eat? Include these vegetables in diabetic diet
Now the question arises what to eat then? So the answer is: vegetables that are high in fibre and low on the glycemic index.
These vegetables not only keep blood sugar stable but also provide the body with essential nutrients.
Diabetes is not just conquered by medication but by being wise. Blindly considering vegetables as healthy can be dangerous. Not every vegetable is a part of health especially when you are fighting a battle against blood sugar. So the next time you serve a thali, think of health as well, not just taste.
