New Delhi: As soon as summer arrives, mangoes become a topic of discussion in every household, or indeed across the country. Everyone, whether adults or children, loves to eat mangoes. There's hardly a home where mangoes aren't talked about during the summer. In the latest edition of Mann Ki Baat, Prime Minister Narendra Modi highlighted the remarkable diversity of mango varieties found across the country.

What did PM Modi say about mangoes?

During the radio programme, PM Modi reflected on this shared enthusiasm for mango varieties found across the country.

PM Modi praised the mangoes grown in different parts of India and explained that each region's mango is known for its unique flavor and aroma. This is why it is called the king of fruits. It should be noted that India is among the world's largest mango producers, with hundreds of varieties grown here.

Do every region has its own taste and identity?

A reel featuring Prime Minister Narendra Modi was recently shared on MyGovIndia's official Instagram account.

In his reel, Prime Minister Modi highlighted the famous mangoes from different parts of the country.

Speaking about the fruit’s cultural significance in Hindi, he said, “As soon as summer comes, another discussion starts in every house. And that is mango. Mango is the subject of discussion. There isn’t a house in India where mango is not discussed in summer.” He went on to celebrate the unique characteristics of mangoes grown in different regions, noting, “Every area has its own mango, its own taste, its own fragrance. Maharashtra and Konkan’s Hapus, Alphonso, and Gujarat’s Kesar. This is the life of Amritsar. Uttar Pradesh’s Dasheri and my Kashi’s Langda.”

The Hapus (Alphonso) from Maharashtra and Konkan is renowned worldwide for its flavor and rich pulp. The saffron from Gujarat is the heart of mango juice, making it a popular choice for making mango juice. The Dasheri mango from Uttar Pradesh is a favorite among many. The Langda mango from Kashi has a unique characteristic, it remains green even after ripening.

Similarly, Bihar's Jardalu mango is recognisable from afar by its aroma. Similarly, names like Chausa and Malda are associated with people's memories.

What about south?

Talking about south, PM Modi said that, "If you go to South India, then Banganpally, Totapuri, Neelam, Malgoa, Bengal’s Imsagar, Odisha and Andhra Pradesh’s golden line, that is, the place changes. The form, colour, and taste of mango also change."

This means that the appearance, color, and taste of each mango vary depending on the region. People have childhood memories associated with each mango variety.

From small villages to global market

PM Modi explained that Indian mangoes are no longer limited to domestic markets, but have reached worldwide markets. Indian mangoes have also established a distinct identity in the global market.

"And friends, this journey of mango is now reaching the global market from the village," he added.

Did PM Modi praise farmers?

Prime Minister Modi also praised his farmer brothers and sisters involved in mango production during his Mann Ki Baat address.

"Today, through Mann Ki Baat, I will praise my farmer brothers and sisters associated with the production of mangoes. You are not a common farmer for the country’s agricultural economy; you are very special. Keep spreading like this," he added.
