New Delhi: For the 77th Republic Day celebrations, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday arrived at Kartavya Path wearing a beautiful bright and multi-coloured Rajasthani turban also known as safa or pagdi, a signature element that has become a highlight of the annual celebrations alongside the parade.

PM Modi's region-inspired turban was paired with a blue kurta and a Nehru jacket, which stood out against the formal backdrop of the parade.

Like every year, the Prime Minister’s choice of colourful headgear, which adds a strong cultural note to the national event, became one of the first talking points, even before the marching ceremony and tableaux came in.

What made PM Modi’s turban stand out this year?

The turban featured a mix of vibrant colours arranged in a traditional Rajasthani print. The red-tie dye turban was bold but not flashy with gold motifs. PM Modi's look reflected folk traditions from western India, with patterns commonly seen during festivals and public ceremonies.
