During the grand and historic 148th Jagannath Rath Yatra in Ahmedabad, chaos broke out when an elephant lost control due to the loud DJ music. The incident occurred in the Khadia area, through which the yatra was passing. On seeing one elephant panic, two more elephants also became agitated, leading to a stampede-like situation in the large crowd.
The presence of elephants in the Jagannath Yatra is a significant part of tradition. During the procession, one of the elephants was startled by the blaring DJ sound and began to run. Following it, two more elephants lost control. Soon, three elephants were seen running through the narrow lanes of Khadia, creating an atmosphere of fear among devotees and locals.
According to initial reports, around 5 to 6 elephants became uncontrollable, with three of them running through the streets. People panicked and scrambled to get out of the way—some took shelter inside buildings while others fled along the roads. The situation became so critical that the chariot had to be halted for about 15 minutes.
Reports suggest that three to four people were injured in the commotion, including a media person who was covering the event. Fortunately, no one suffered serious injuries. Bystanders acted quickly to help one another and ensure the injured were moved to safety.
As soon as the elephants became unruly, the forest department and mahouts (elephant handlers) sprang into action. They were equipped with tranquilizers and other necessary resources. After considerable effort, the elephants were calmed and guided back to the main route. Only then was the procession allowed to resume.
After a 15-minute interruption, the Rath Yatra resumed. Due to the swift response by the authorities and the forest department, a major mishap was averted. The injured were taken to the hospital with the help of 108 ambulance services. Currently, all are reported to be in stable condition, and the yatra is continuing peacefully.
