National News:The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Saturday morning carried out raids at the Mumbai residence of industrialist Anil Ambani and premises linked to his company, Reliance Communications (RCom). The searches, which began around 7 am, are part of an investigation into a large-scale bank fraud case. Officials confirmed that Ambani was at home with his family when the investigative team arrived.
The CBI has filed a First Information Report (FIR) against Anil Ambani and RCom, alleging that the company defaulted on loans taken from a consortium of banks. According to the complaint, the State Bank of India alone has suffered a loss of over ₹2,000 crore. Investigators are now examining whether funds were diverted or misused. Multiple properties connected to RCom and Ambani are being searched as part of this operation.
This action comes shortly after the Enforcement Directorate (ED) summoned Anil Ambani on August 1 in connection with a separate but related case involving loans worth around ₹17,000 crore. Several banks had reportedly sanctioned huge sums to RCom and its associate firms, which later turned into non-performing assets (NPAs). The CBI’s current action is seen as a continuation of the larger probe into how these loans were used and whether fraudulent practices were involved.
Reliance Communications was once considered one of India’s most promising telecom companies. Under Ambani’s leadership, the firm expanded rapidly but later collapsed due to growing debt, stiff competition, and falling revenues. The financial crisis forced the company into insolvency proceedings, leaving banks struggling to recover their dues. With the case now under scrutiny from both the CBI and ED, investigators are trying to determine the role of company officials and promoters in the massive financial mess.
The raids on Ambani’s residence mark a serious step in the ongoing inquiry. While the CBI has not yet issued a detailed public statement, sources suggest that documents and digital records are being seized to strengthen the case. The outcome of this probe could have significant implications for Anil Ambani, once one of India’s leading business figures, who is now facing deep legal and financial troubles as his telecom empire lies in ruins.
