National News: Ankit, a resident of Thua village, has been arrested for demanding extortion money from two doctors in the city. He is known to follow gangster Lawrence Bishnoi and wanted to become famous like him. Ankit planned to threaten hospital owners, commission agents, and senior officials by making threatening phone calls.
To carry out his plan, Ankit searched online for mobile numbers of his targets. However, many people did not answer his calls. Ankit is also addicted to costly drugs. Late on Saturday evening, the CIA police of Narwana and the Jind Civil Lines police arrested him from the Narwana area.
When the police surrounded him, Ankit tried to escape by jumping off a bridge. Unfortunately, he fractured his leg in the fall. He was immediately admitted to the civil hospital for medical treatment. The police will produce him in court on Monday.
Extortion complaints had been registered earlier — on August 7 in Jind Civil Lines and August 8 in the city police station. Dr. Monika Poonia, director of Muskaan Hospital, said she received repeated calls from unknown numbers demanding 20 lakh rupees as extortion money. She was threatened with death if she did not pay.
Naresh, the manager of Saraswati Eye Care, also reported receiving threatening calls. Due to his busy schedule, he could not answer some calls. Later, he received threatening WhatsApp messages warning that if money was not paid by 8 PM, he would be killed.
The police had been searching for Ankit in connection with these cases. On Saturday evening, they got a tip that he was moving around Narwana and trying to flee. Acting quickly, the police arrested him.
After demanding money, Ankit would switch off his phone and keep changing his location. This made it difficult for the police to trace and catch him.
According to police, Ankit is a cunning criminal. Villagers say his family works in farming, and he studied only up to 10th grade. Since school days, he was inclined toward crime. He has been charged with theft and is involved in many other criminal cases.
This case highlights the rising problem of extortion and threats faced by medical professionals. Thanks to the swift action of the police, Ankit was caught before he could cause further harm.
