Assam: After the completion of the special amendment process of the voter list in Assam, preparations are being made to remove more than one million names. The Election Commission said that this process has been completed after a door-to-door investigation. Assembly elections are to be held in the state next year; hence, efforts are being made to keep the voter list clean.

Who all are being removed, and why?

According to the data, the 1,056,291 names whose deletion has come to light include:

  • 478,992 people who have died
  • 523,680 people who have changed their residence
  • 53,619 names were registered twice

All of these have been marked for removal from the list.

Why was this process different from other states?

In the rest of the states where there is Special Intensive Revision (SIR), the documents are scrutinized. But in Assam, due to the National Register of Citizens (NRC) not being completely updated, this process was done in a different way. Here people were given the opportunity to fill out the form to add new names, correct mistakes, and register objections to any name.

During the process, more than 29,000 block-level officers and around 2,600 observers visited 61 lakh households across the state.

How many total voters are there in the state?

According to the Election Commission, currently there are 2.51 crore voters in Assam. in these

  • 1.25 crore men
  • 1.26 crore women
  • And 379 other category voters are included.

Apart from this, 93,021 D-voters (i.e., those whose citizenship is in doubt) have been kept out of this figure.

What will be the next step?

Now the process of claims and objections will continue till January 22. After this, the final voter list will be released on February 10. The Commission also clarified that four conditions are necessary to become a voter: being an Indian citizen, meeting the prescribed age limit, having ordinary residence in the concerned area, and not being deprived of voting rights under any legal restriction.
