Jaipur: The group of 11 friends, aged between 20 and 25, had ventured into the river to beat the summer heat, but a sudden shift to deeper waters led to the tragedy. Local police and rescue teams recovered the bodies, which were sent to Saadat Hospital for post-mortem. The incident has left the community in shock, with families and authorities grappling with the loss

The group, all young men aged 20 to 25, had ventured into the river to cool off from the summer heat during a casual outing. Unaware of the river’s deceptive depth and strong currents, they were swept into deeper waters, leading to the devastating loss.

Rescue Efforts and Recovery

Local villagers, alerted by the group’s distress, rushed to assist but could only save three of the friends, who were pulled from the river and treated at Tonk’s Saadat Hospital. Their condition is reported as stable. Police and rescue teams, supported by divers, worked tirelessly to recover the bodies of the eight victims, which were later sent for post-mortem examinations. The operation, which extended into the evening of June 9, saw an outpouring of support from locals, though the mood remained somber as families mourned.

Investigation and Safety Concerns

Authorities are investigating the cause of the accident, with preliminary findings suggesting the group underestimated the river’s depth and currents. The Banas River, swollen due to recent rains, is known for its unpredictable flow near the Fraser Bridge, a popular spot for locals. This tragedy has sparked renewed calls for safety measures, such as warning signs and lifeguard presence at riverbanks frequented by visitors.

A Community in Mourning

The loss of eight young lives has shaken Jaipur and Tonk, with social media reflecting widespread sorrow. Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma expressed condolences, directing swift rescue and relief efforts. As families grieve, this tragedy underscores the need for greater awareness of water safety, leaving a lasting impact on the region.
