New Delhi: 13 agreements have been signed between Bangladesh and China for cooperation on many important projects including Teesta River. After these agreements, the discussion about changes in regional strategic equations has intensified. Especially China's increasing role in the Teesta River Project is being considered sensitive for India, because this area is very close to India's Siliguri Corridor i.e. 'Chicken Neck'.
Bangladesh has sought technical and financial cooperation from China to strengthen Teesta river management, flood control, river conservation and irrigation infrastructure. Agreeing to this proposal, China has given assurance of investment, engineering assistance and training to the officials in the project.
This is Prime Minister Tariq Rahman's first visit to China after assuming office. He met China's top leaders and officials and finalised several strategic agreements. Analysts believe that this visit is being considered a sign of changing trend in the foreign policy of Bangladesh.
Teesta River enters Bangladesh through Sikkim and West Bengal of India. This river flows very close to the Siliguri Corridor, which is the most important land link connecting North-East India with the rest of the country. In such a situation, China's active participation in this project may increase concerns in terms of India's security and strategic interests.
Under the agreement, China will cooperate in works related to river dredging, embankment construction, flood management and modernisation of water resources in the next few years. Bangladeshi officials will also be provided assistance in technical training and project management.
The 30-year-old treaty between India and Bangladesh on sharing of Ganga water is nearing its end. At such a time, increasing cooperation with China may create new strategic challenges in the future on issues related to water resources. However, no official reaction has come yet from either country on this.
