Kolkata: The atmosphere heated up in South 24 Parganas on Sunday. Some people entered the party office of TMC MP Bapi Haldar and vandalized it. They threw office stuff here and there. As soon as the news spread, there was panic in the area. The police came running and somehow pacified the matter.
Local people say that stock of relief material was kept in the office. Some people raised the question whether the land on which the office is built is legal or not. The debate started on just this matter. Slogans were raised and then the crowd went out of control. Angry people attacked the office.
Bapi Haldar denied all the allegations. Said that the items in the office were for the poor and needy. Some people are trying to defame as part of a conspiracy. Haldar says let the investigation be done, milk will turn milk into water.
TMC leaders directly allege that since the change in the political atmosphere in Bengal, the opposition is deliberately targeting TMC leaders and offices. The party said that this attack was planned. On the other hand, BJP shrugged it off. Said that we have nothing to do with it. TMC is blaming us to hide its failure.
The mercury has been high in Bengal politics for the last few days. First the case of protest against Abhishek Banerjee, then the controversy of attack on Kalyan Banerjee, and now vandalism in Bapi Haldar's office. After every incident, TMC and BJP are accusing each other of inciting violence.
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee described the incident as serious. Taking aim at BJP, she said that anarchy is being spread in Bengal in the name of opposition. Mamta asked TMC workers to remain calm but also added that it would be answered democratically.
At present the police are engaged in investigation. The attackers are being identified. The footage of cameras installed around the office is being scrutinized. Officers say that the culprits will not be spared. Even though it is not the election season, political temperatures are high in Bengal. The attack on the office has added fuel to the fire.
