Bhubaneswar: Bhubaneswar, the capital of Odisha, is more than just a gateway to Puri; it is known as the 'Temple City.' If you are visiting to attend the Rath Yatra in Puri, your trip would be incomplete without exploring Bhubaneswar. While there are as many as 23 places to visit in and around the city, if you are short on time and have only one day to spend here, you should definitely explore the following sites:
The Lingaraj Temple is among the most popular temples in Bhubaneswar. Open from 6:30 AM to 7:30 PM, it is the city's oldest and largest Hindu temple. Dedicated to Lord Shiva, this temple was built in the 11th century. It is located in the Old Town area of Bhubaneswar, just 4.5 km from the airport and approximately 5 km from the railway station.
Located near the Lingaraj Temple, Bindu Sarovar is a sacred tank believed to have been created by Lord Shiva to quench Goddess Parvati's thirst. It is considered a holy site, and devotees often take a dip in its waters. The Bindu Sarovar ghat is open from 6:00 AM to 8:00 PM.
The Dhauli Giri Stupa, also known as the Peace Pagoda, is one of Bhubaneswar's ancient monuments. There is an entry fee of ₹50 to visit the stupa. A light and sound show is also held here in the evening. The site is open from 6:00 AM to 7:00 PM.
This is another temple dating back to the Kalinga era, believed to have been built in the 11th century and dedicated to Lord Shiva. It derives its name—Rajarani—from the unique yellow and red stones used in its construction, which are known as 'Rajarani stones.' The entry fee for this temple is ₹25 for Indians and ₹250 for foreign nationals.
In Bhubaneswar, the 'City of Temples,' the architecture of any temple you visit is sure to amaze you. The 'torana' (gateway arch), crafted from red sandstone, is particularly striking. While the temple structure itself is square, the roof is designed in a triangular, pyramid-like shape. Entry to this temple is free.
Apart from its temples, Bhubaneswar offers attractions such as the Nandankanan Zoo, Nicco Park, the Odisha State Museum, and the Parashurameshwara Temple, all of which you can explore.
