With the formation of the new government in Delhi, the session of the Delhi Assembly is set to begin on Monday. For the first time, both the Chief Minister and the Leader of the Opposition in the Delhi Assembly will be women. Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLA and former minister Atishi has been elected as the Leader of the Opposition.

AAP leader Sanjeev Jha proposed Atishi’s name for the role, and it was unanimously accepted by all party members. In fact, the AAP convened a meeting of its Legislative Party on Sunday to discuss the agenda for the upcoming assembly session. The meeting began around 1 PM at the AAP headquarters, during which the decision to appoint Atishi as the Leader of the Opposition was finalized. This marks the first time in Delhi Assembly history that women will simultaneously occupy the positions of Chief Minister and Leader of the Opposition.

Assembly Session to Run for Three Days

Following the assembly elections held earlier this month, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has formed a new government in Delhi.

The BJP holds 48 seats in the Assembly, while the opposition party AAP has 22 members.

The BJP has appointed Rekha Gupta as the new Chief Minister of Delhi.

The first session of the new Assembly will begin on 24 February at 11 AM.

During this session, the newly elected MLAs will be sworn in by Protem Speaker Arvinder Singh Lovely, who was appointed by Delhi Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena.

The Speaker and Deputy Speaker of the Assembly will also be elected during this three-day session, which will run from 24 February to 27 February.

Until the new Speaker and Deputy Speaker are elected, Arvinder Singh Lovely*will continue to serve as the Protem Speaker. The election for Assembly Speaker is scheduled for 24 February at 2 PM. The BJP has nominated three-time MLA and former councillor Vijender Gupta for the position.

On 25 February, Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena will address the Assembly. Following his address, the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) report will be tabled. Chief Minister Rekha Gupta will then present a motion of thanks on the LG’s address.
On 27 February, the House will discuss the motion of thanks, and later, the Deputy Speaker of the Assembly will be elected.
