Delhi-NCR, UP, Bihar Among 12 States Under IMD Rain Alert As Monsoon Intensifies

New Delhi: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for heavy rain in 12 states, including Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, and Jammu and Kashmir. According to the weather department, the monsoon is once again taking an aggressive stance.

What did IMD say?

The India Meteorological Department has issued an alert for heavy rain in 12 states, including Uttar Pradesh and Bihar on Sunday. Strong winds of up to 60 to 70 kilometers per hour are expected during this period. The intensity of the storm is so high that trees are expected to be uprooted in many places. There is also a possibility of lightning strikes in many parts of eastern India.

The IMD has predicted heavy rains in Gujarat on Sunday as well, where floods have caused significant damage in several districts. Heavy rains have also caused damage in Assam due to floods. 

Which states are on alert?

According to the India Meteorological Department's warning, the 12 states most likely to experience severe weather today include Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Uttarakhand, Rajasthan, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Jharkhand, West Bengal, Odisha, Madhya Pradesh, and Gujarat.

Winds of up to 65 to 70 kilometers per hour are expected in many districts of these states. Several of these states have received significant rainfall in the past 24 hours, which is expected to increase their rainfall quota. The Meteorological Department has advised people to exercise caution.

What about the Bay of Bengal?

According to the Indian Meteorological Department, heavy rainfall is occurring in the northeastern states due to a low pressure area and a western disturbance in the Bay of Bengal. Gujarat, West Bengal, Maharashtra, and Odisha are currently experiencing heavy rainfall. According to the IMD, the weather is expected to remain the same until July 31. In the hilly states of Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, and Jammu and Kashmir, heavy rainfall is also occurring. Many roads in Himachal Pradesh remain completely closed due to rain and landslides.

Did IMD issue Red-Orange and Yellow alerts?

• The Indian Meteorological Department has issued a red alert in Odisha and Maharashtra on July 26. 
• The IMD has issued an orange alert on Sunday in the states of Gujarat, Goa and Chhattisgarh. 
• A yellow alert has been issued today in Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Assam, Jharkhand, West Bengal, Arunachal Pradesh. 
• The Meteorological Department has predicted heavy rains on July 27, 28, 29 and 30. 
• In Gujarat, several districts have been hit by flooding due to continuous rainfall for the past four days. Surat, Banaskantha, Bharuch, and Amreli have also suffered damage. The Meteorological Department has issued a red alert for heavy rainfall in Kutch, Mehsana, Patan, Sabarkantha, Anand, Amreli, and Surat on Sunday. The Meteorological Department has urged people to exercise caution during the rain.
