Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday expressed his gratitude to US President Donald Trump, who called him to congratulate him on his 75th birthday. Trump made this phone call on the eve of Prime Minister Modi's birthday, which is on September 17.

In a post on Twitter, PM Modi wrote, My friend, President Trump, thank you for your phone call and warm wishes on my 75th birthday. Like you, I am also fully committed to taking the India-US comprehensive and global partnership to new heights.

He further said, we support your initiative towards a peaceful solution to the Ukraine conflict. Trump has been urging India - though recently his focus has been on Europe - to stop buying Russian oil so that it can be forced to stop the Ukraine war.

First conversation after 17 June

This was the first conversation between the two world leaders after June 17. This conversation has taken place at a crucial juncture in India-US relations, which comes after a period of trade tensions, which saw a long tug of war over tariffs. Recently, Trump brought a significant softening in his stance and said that trade talks with India are still on track and he plans to talk to his good friend Prime Minister Modi in the coming weeks.

His remarks are being seen as a positive sign that will help bring bilateral trade talks back on track by taking advantage of the long-standing personal relationship between the two leaders.
