Ghaziabad: The death of three real sisters in Ghaziabad has raised serious concerns about the dangerous effects of online gaming and task-based apps. Initial investigation revealed that the three sisters were addicted to a Korean task-based gaming app, where they were given new challenges daily and they started calling each other by Korean names.
According to the police, the ages of the deceased sisters were 16, 14 and 12 years. She used to remain active for hours on a special Korean app on her mobile, in which different mental and behavioral tasks have to be completed. Family members said that the three sisters had become so attached to this app that even while talking to each other, they started using Korean names instead of their real names.
Investigation revealed that daily tasks were given to the users in the app, on completing which they would get points and rank. The sisters remained busy completing these tasks till late night. Many of the tasks were mentally demanding, including staying awake for long periods of time, constantly looking at screens, and emotional challenges.
Family members said that the three sisters had started becoming irritable for the last few months. She used to stay awake till late night and did not talk much to anyone. When she was interrupted, she would say, “It is important to complete the task.” However, the family had no idea that this habit could prove fatal.
According to the police, the parents were out of the house on the day the accident occurred. On returning home, all three sisters were found unconscious. They were immediately taken to the hospital, but doctors declared all three dead. In the initial investigation, excessive mental stress and fatigue are being considered as the possible cause of death.
Sarokaha police station in-charge said that mobile forensic team has been called and investigation of phone records and sports data has been started. He said, "Preliminary tests revealed that the three sisters had spent several hours continuously playing online games. However, the exact cause of death will be known only after the postmortem report comes."
Police and family reported that the mobile phone was available at home, but the parents did not know how long the game continued during play. Children often used smartphones without permission and continued playing games for long hours.
People living nearby say that the sisters were seen staying awake till late at night many times playing mobile games. They had understood that gaming had diverted children's attention to something other than entertainment, but no one warned them about this.
Taking the matter seriously, the police have started a detailed investigation after the postmortem. Further necessary legal action will be taken based on mobile forensic investigation and statements of local people. During the investigation, it will also be seen whether there was any mental pressure or stressful situation with the children.
