Article 370 Abrogation Anniversary: Massive Security Arrangements Across Jammu & Kashmir

Srinagar: On the occasion of the seventh anniversary of the removal of Article 370, security arrangements have been tightened across Jammu and Kashmir on Wednesday. Additional deployment of police, CRPF and army has been made in sensitive areas. The administration has implemented multi-layered security arrangements to maintain law and order. In view of the proposed programmes and protests of political parties, special surveillance is being maintained at many places.

What are the special arrangements of security agencies?

Security agencies have set up additional checkpoints in several cities including Srinagar. Inbound and outbound vehicles are being thoroughly checked and patrolling has been continuously increased in sensitive areas. Activities are also being monitored through drones, CCTV cameras and other surveillance equipment. Officials say that security forces have been instructed to remain fully alert in the border areas and terrorism affected areas also.

What are the preparations of political parties?

On the anniversary of the removal of Article 370, the politics of Jammu and Kashmir also seem to be divided into two poles. The National Conference (NC), People's Democratic Party (PDP) and Congress have decided to observe the day as 'Black Day' and organise protest programmes. On the other hand, Bharatiya Janata Party has made preparations to organise programmes and public meetings in various districts, calling it a historic decision. The administration has also kept an eye on all political activities.

Why has vigilance been increased?

The administration believes that there is a sensitive atmosphere regarding this day. For this reason, extensive preparations have been made in advance to maintain law and order and deal with any possible security challenge. According to officials, coordination has been established among all security agencies and quick response teams have also been put on alert mode to deal with the emergency.

What happened on 5th August 2019?

On August 5, 2019, the central government abolished the special status of Jammu and Kashmir by neutralising most of the provisions of Article 370 of the Constitution. Along with this, while reorganising the then state, it was divided into two union territories, Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh. Since this decision, 5th August every year is considered important from political and administrative point of view and different political parties have their own opinions regarding it.

What appeal has been made to the common people?

The administration has appealed to the people to maintain peace and not pay attention to rumours. Officials said any suspicious activity should be immediately reported to police or security agencies. It has also been advised to avoid sharing misleading or unconfirmed information on social media. Security agencies say the situation is normal across the Union Territory and the precautionary measures have been taken only with the aim of ensuring security.
