New Delhi: The Government of India has decided to take a major infrastructure step for the Siliguri Corridor, popularly known as 'Chicken Neck'. This narrow but very important rail connectivity line will now be made underground so that it can become strategically more secure and stronger.

What is ‘chicken neck’ and why is it important?

‘Chicken Neck’ is the narrow strip of land in India that connects the mainland to the northeastern states. Its width remains only 20-25 kilometers at some places and it is trapped between Nepal, Bhutan and Bangladesh. The functioning of this small corridor depends on the supply of supplies, movement of troops and movement of common people to the entire Northeast.

Why propose an underground rail track?

Ashwini Vaishnaw has said that considering the geographical location of “Chicken Neck” and the possible dangers it faces, the Railway Ministry is planning to lay about 40 km of underground railway line. Its purpose is to keep the main link secure and active in the event of a crisis or security threat.

Analysts say that laying the line under the ground will increase the safety from wind-induced shocks, possible blockages and external pressures and the supply line will not be broken even in times of disaster.

Is this just for security reasons?

Security is the biggest reason, but the move is also an important initiative to improve logistics and connectivity. Having an underground track will reduce disruption in rail operations and technically this area will be better prepared for the future. The government has included provision for this project in the railway budget and has described it as a major project to strengthen the connectivity of the Northeast.

Are there concerns related to Bangladesh and China also?

Some analysts have in the past indicated that there have also been reports of attempts by Bangladesh or pro-China groups to create tension on the 'chicken neck'. Given such geopolitical context, India plans to further strengthen security measures.

What does this step mean for the Northeast of India?

Connecting the Northeastern states to the mainland is a strategic and economic priority for India. Securing the ‘chicken neck’ and further strengthening rail connectivity will not only provide better convenience to passengers but will also ensure continuity of trade, military and supplies.

This step is going to strengthen national unity and connectivity along with security.
