Stampede at Puri Rath Yatra: Over 500 Devotees Injured Amid Heat and Chaos

National News: The sacred city of Puri in Odisha witnessed a distressing turn of events during this year’s annual Rath Yatra, as a stampede-like situation left more than 500 devotees injured. Despite elaborate security and administrative arrangements, the overwhelming crowd that had gathered to pull the majestic chariots of Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra, and Goddess Subhadra resulted in chaos and panic. The scorching heat and oppressive humidity further worsened the situation, causing many to collapse from exhaustion and suffocation.

Humidity and Overcrowding Lead to Mass Fainting

Odisha's State Minister Mukesh Mahaling confirmed that the primary cause of the injuries was the intense heat and humidity, which led many devotees to faint during the procession. Responding swiftly, authorities transported the injured to nearby primary health centres and Puri Medical College Hospital. The government ensured an adequate supply of glucose, water, and emergency medical care at all medical facilities. Mahaling stated that all injured individuals are receiving proper treatment and care.

Grand Celebrations Draw Lakhs, Including Top Dignitaries

The incident occurred on June 25, the main day of the Rath Yatra, as lakhs of devotees gathered since early morning to participate in the chariot-pulling ritual. The three colossal chariots were pulled from the Shri Jagannath Temple (Srimandir) to the Shri Gundicha Temple, approximately 2.6 kilometers away.

Odisha Governor Hari Babu Kambhampati and Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi also participated in the event, joining the sea of devotees in the grand celebration.  The air reverberated with chants of "Jai Jagannath" and "Hari Bol," accompanied by the traditional sounds of cymbals, trumpets, and conch shells, lending a divine fervor to the spiritual gathering.

Tradition Meets Devotion: Cultural Performances & Royal Rituals

As per tradition, the ceremonial sweeping ritual ‘Chhera Pahanra’ was performed by Gajapati Maharaja Dibyasingha Deb, symbolizing humility and service. The chariots were then decorated with wooden, vibrantly painted horses, and the deities were brought out in the ‘Pahandi’ procession. Folk dancers, musicians, and performers from across Odisha infused the event with cultural richness. Shankaracharya Swami Nischalananda Saraswati of Govardhan Peeth, along with his disciples, was also present to witness the grand spectacle.

Massive Security Arrangements with Modern Surveillance

To manage the enormous crowd, the administration deployed over 10,000 personnel, including state police, Central Police Forces (CPF), NSG commandos, and intelligence units. According to DGP Yashwant Khurania, more than 275 AI-enabled CCTV cameras were installed along the route to monitor the proceedings in real time. ADGP Sanjay Kumar said that in the wake of the recent Pahalgam terror attack, security was significantly ramped up with the deployment of Coast Guard drones, anti-drone systems, canine units, and anti-sabotage teams.

Recurring Mishaps Demand Serious Reflection

The Rath Yatra is the spiritual lifeblood of Puri, but consecutive years of stampede-like incidents have sparked serious concerns. Despite technological upgrades and massive deployments, the crowd management strategies seem to fall short under pressure. Moving forward, there is an urgent need to strengthen crowd control mechanisms, improve heat management protocols, and ensure rapid medical response systems during such massive religious gatherings.
