Jammu Kashmir: The Rajya Sabha elections in Jammu and Kashmir turned into a display of the National Conference’s dominance. The party walked away with three out of four seats, winning the first two rounds with huge margins. Senior leader Chaudhary Mohammad Ramzan and Sajjad Kichloo defeated their BJP rivals comfortably, leaving no doubts about NC’s command in the Valley. With each round, it seemed like the NC was heading for a complete sweep.
Until the final round, political circles assumed the BJP would walk away without a seat. Their initial defeats suggested the saffron party had no space in the contest. But when voting closed for the last seat, the BJP showed it was not out of the game. Candidate Sat Sharma secured 32 votes, far more than expected, denying NC the chance to claim all four seats in one go.
The big question now is how the BJP managed to gather extra votes despite a smaller base in the Assembly. Cross-voting and backroom strategies are being discussed widely. While NC relied on its loyal Valley support, BJP drew strength from surprise backers. These unexpected numbers gave the party not only a Rajya Sabha seat but also fresh energy to prove it still has influence in Jammu and Kashmir.
NC leaders were confident of repeating their Assembly dominance at the Rajya Sabha level. For a while, it looked like the BJP would remain shut out entirely. A clean sweep would have cemented NC’s image as the only decisive force in Kashmir politics. Instead, the final result proved that while NC may still dominate, the BJP is not ready to vanish from the battlefield.
Analysts believe the outcome paints a clear picture of the state’s political geography. The NC continues to lead in the Valley, while the BJP retains strength in Jammu. Even though NC claimed more seats, BJP’s single victory ensured it remains relevant. Political experts say the fight ahead will not be one-sided but instead shaped by constant competition between these two powerhouses.
This election was the first major political test in Jammu and Kashmir since the restoration of Assembly powers. Both parties invested their full organizational muscle. With NC winning big but BJP spoiling their sweep, the battle lines for upcoming elections have become sharper. Each side now knows where it stands and how much ground it must defend or capture before the next contest.
For the people of Jammu and Kashmir, the Rajya Sabha results underline that politics remains unpredictable. While NC’s supporters celebrated a strong showing, BJP’s backers took pride in the last-minute victory. The outcome has set the stage for a fierce Assembly election ahead. Both parties will now push harder to prove their strength, knowing every vote and every seat can alter the balance of power.
