Jammu-Punjab Trains at Risk Amid India-Pak Clash, Passengers Scrap Travel Plans
The intensifying India-Pakistan conflict, sparked by India’s Operation Sindoor missile strikes on May 7, 2025, and Pakistan’s retaliatory drone attacks, has disrupted railway services in northern India. At least six trains bound for Jammu and Punjab face potential cancellations or diversions, prompting widespread ticket cancellations as passengers prioritize safety amid heightened border tensions.
Conflict Disrupts Rail Network
Operation Sindoor, targeting terror camps in Pakistan, led to Pakistan’s failed drone and missile attacks on Indian cities and heavy shelling along the Line of Control (LoC) in Kupwara. This escalation has impacted Northern Railways, with trains like the Shalimar Express, Vande Bharat to Katra, and Jammu-Patna Archana Express at risk. Security measures, including blackouts in Amritsar and Gurdaspur and airspace restrictions, have complicated rail operations, particularly on routes passing through or near border areas sensitive to the ongoing conflict.
Passenger Cancellations Surge
Fearing delays, diversions, or potential risks, passengers have cancelled tickets in droves. Northern Railways reported a spike in refund requests, with many opting to postpone travel plans until the situation stabilizes. Travelers like Anita Sharma, who cancelled her ticket on the Jammu Tawi Express, cited concerns over safety and uncertainty about reaching their destinations. The railway’s ticketing platform, IRCTC, has streamlined refund processes to accommodate the sudden surge, while urging passengers to check real-time train statuses.
Security and Operational Challenges
To ensure safety, railway authorities have increased security at major stations like Jammu Tawi and Amritsar Junction, deploying Railway Protection Force (RPF) personnel and conducting thorough checks. Coordination with local police and the Border Security Force (BSF) is ongoing to monitor tracks near border zones. Temporary halts or rerouting may be implemented if security risks escalate, further affecting schedules.
Efforts to Mitigate Impact
Northern Railways is working to minimize disruptions, issuing advisories via SMS and social media to keep passengers informed. Alternative routes and rescheduling are being explored, but the volatile India-Pakistan situation poses ongoing challenges. As tensions persist, travelers are urged to stay cautious and plan accordingly.
