New Delhi: Earthquake tremors were felt once again in some parts of North India. A moderate but deep earthquake of 5.7 magnitude occurred near Leh-Ladakh on Monday morning. According to the National Center for Seismology (NCS), the earthquake was felt at 11:51 am. The center was at 36.71°N latitude and 74.32°E longitude. Its depth is said to be 171 kilometers. However, there is no news of any death or major damage yet.
Due to the great depth of the earthquake, the energy spreads as it reaches the surface. Because of this, there is less movement on the surface. In comparison, shallow earthquakes cause more devastation. People in Leh and surrounding areas got scared after feeling a slight shock.
Apart from this, an earthquake of 6.0 magnitude also occurred in northwestern Kashmir. According to GFZ Germany, people felt the earthquake around noon. Its depth is said to be 35 kilometers, which is near Gilgit-Baltistan in central Pakistan. The earthquake was also felt in the Kashmir Valley. There is no confirmation of damage at present. Officials are monitoring the situation after the earthquake.
Recently several small earthquakes occurred in Afghanistan. On January 18, an earthquake of magnitude 4.0 occurred in the evening and 4.1 in the morning. Its depth is said to be 10 kilometers. An earthquake of 4.2 magnitude also occurred on January 15. The Hindu Kush region was affected by the collision of plates. The Indian and Eurasian plates meet here.
Earthquakes caused by the movement of plates are common in the Himalayas and Hindu Kush. Old buildings in Afghanistan have become weak. Thousands of deaths have occurred in previous earthquakes. People are struggling with conflict and poverty. Because of this, there could be a major loss due to an earthquake. Here people are alert in earthquake affected areas.
The administration has given safety advice to citizens to protect themselves in case of an earthquake.
