Mumbai: A sudden earthquake in the Marathwada region of Maharashtra on Thursday morning shocked people. An earthquake measuring 4.4 on the Richter scale was recorded in Hingoli district. The impact of the tremors was also felt in nearby Parbhani and Nanded districts. As soon as the tremors were felt, many people came out of their homes and shops as a precaution.
However, the situation became normal within some time. According to the administration, no injuries or any major damage has been reported so far.
The intensity of this earthquake that occurred in the morning was not much, but the tremors were so strong that people felt them clearly. Utensils and fans started shaking in many houses. Some people said that at first they felt as if a heavy vehicle were passing, but within a few seconds they realised that it was an earthquake.
Panicked people immediately moved towards open spaces. It is a matter of relief that no incident like collapse of any building or major crack was reported.
As soon as information about the earthquake was received, the local administration and disaster management department became active. Officials kept an eye on the affected areas and took stock of the situation. Initial investigation has not confirmed any major loss of life or property.
At present, the administration has appealed to the people not to pay attention to rumours and to immediately inform the local authorities about any emergency.
Hingoli and surrounding areas have already felt mild earthquake tremors. An earthquake of 4.7 magnitude occurred here in April this year. At that time there were cracks in some houses and community buildings, but there was no major accident.
Experts say that light seismic activities are recorded in this area from time to time. Such shocks usually do not cause much harm, but they cannot be ignored either.
If an earthquake occurs, the first thing to do is remain calm. Instead of running in panic, sit under a sturdy table or furniture and keep your head safe. Keep distance from windows, glass and heavy items.
If you are in a multi-storey building, do not use the lift until the shaking stops. While going out, use the stairs and after reaching open space, stay away from electric poles and tall buildings.
This news is being updated continuously. If any new information comes to light from the administration, it will also be added.
