Maharasthra: A woman doctor from Satara, Maharashtra, died by suicide late on Thursday night. She was working at the Phaltan Sub-District Hospital and left behind a four-page suicide note naming several people. Police have arrested one person in connection with the case.
Serious Allegations in Suicide Note
In her suicide note, the doctor accused a police officer of raping her four times. She wrote that she was being forced to issue fake fitness certificates for police case suspects and was harassed when she refused. She also mentioned that not only police officials but even an MP and his two personal assistants had pressured her in one such case.
The 26-year-old woman worked as a medical officer at the Phaltan Sub-District Hospital. She wrote on her palm that Sub-Inspector Gopal Badne had raped her four times and that she had been facing mental and physical torture for more than five months. She had been working at the hospital for 23 months, with just one month left before her bond period ended. After that, she planned to pursue her postgraduate medical studies. According to a media report, the suicide note stated that police officers were forcing her to issue fake medical fitness certificates for several accused individuals, many of whom never came for medical checks. When she refused, Sub-Inspector Gopal Badne and others started harassing her.
The suicide note described an incident where, after she denied issuing a certificate, two personal assistants of an MP entered the hospital. They made her talk to the MP on the phone, who indirectly threatened her. However, the police have not yet revealed the name of the MP mentioned in the note.
The doctor’s cousin also made similar claims. He said that complaints were made two or three times, but no action was taken despite writing letters to the Superintendent of Police (SP) and Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP). In one letter, they even asked who would be responsible if something happened to her. They also complained about poor security at the hospital premises. The cousin added that when they called the DSP, he promised to bring her back but never took any action.
At present, cases of rape and abetment of suicide have been filed against officers Badne and Banker. The police officer has been suspended. According to news agency PTI, Kolhapur Range Inspector General Sunil Phulari said the investigation is underway based on the evidence collected so far. The case has been officially registered in Satara district, and the involved police officer remains suspended.
