Imphal: President's Rule has been revoked in the northeastern state of Manipur after nearly a year. The President issued the order on the recommendation of Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla. This has paved the way for the formation of a new government in Manipur.
The National Democratic Alliance (NDA) has already staked its claim to form the government. NDA legislative party leader Y. Khemchand Singh will take oath as the Chief Minister of Manipur this evening (Wednesday) at 6 PM. The state BJP has given this information. The swearing-in ceremony will be held at 'Lok Bhavan', where preparations have been underway since morning.
The Manipur unit of the BJP said in a post on 'X', "The swearing-in ceremony of Shri Y. Khemchand Singh as the Hon'ble Chief Minister of Manipur will be held today, February 4, 2026, at 6 PM at Lok Bhavan." It further added, "Under his experienced and visionary leadership, Manipur is poised to move forward on the path of peace, development, and good governance, ushering in a new era of stability and progress in the state."
President's Rule had been in effect in the restive state of Manipur, which borders an international boundary, since February last year. A delegation of the NDA, led by Singh, met Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla at Lok Bhavan here and staked its claim to form the government. The delegation that met Bhalla included two MLAs from the Kuki-Zo dominated districts of Churachandpur and Pherzawl. Singh was elected the leader of the BJP legislative party and subsequently the leader of the NDA legislative party in New Delhi on Tuesday. BJP MLA Thongbam Biswajit had earlier said that five MLAs, including Singh, would take oath as ministers.
The Chief Minister-designate Khemchand belongs to the Meitei community, while the two Deputy Chief Ministers who will be sworn in along with him, Nemcha Kipgen and Losii Dikho, belong to the Kuki and Naga tribes respectively.
