Manipur: Tension spread once again on Tuesday night in the Torbung area bordering the Bishnupur and Churachandpur districts of Manipur. According to officials, there was an exchange of fire between security forces and unidentified armed men at around 8:30 pm, which worsened the situation.
At least one civilian is reported to have been injured in this incident, although his identity has not been revealed yet. Officials said that after the firing, there was chaos in the area and people were in panic.
Local people say that on the instructions of the government, about 389 displaced people from 67 families were recently resettled in the Phougakchao Ikhai and Torbung areas. It is alleged that on Tuesday night, unknown armed people who came from Churachandpur attacked Torbung village, in response to which the security forces immediately took charge. It is being said that the attackers also used bombs, and the entire encounter lasted for about 20 minutes.
The people of the village are very scared after the latest firing. Additional contingents of state police and central security forces have been sent to the spot to bring the situation under control. At present there is tension in Torbung and surrounding areas.
It is noteworthy that Manipur has been in the grip of violence since May 3, 2023. So far, more than 260 people have lost their lives in this crisis, and about 60 thousand people have been forced to leave their homes. In view of the situation, President's rule has been in force in the state since February 13. The government has started the process of rehabilitation of displaced people from Bishnupur district.
Meanwhile, on December 14, some BJP MLAs, including four Kuki-Jo MLAs, had held a closed-door meeting in Delhi. The MLAs attending the meeting had called it an important step towards restoring peace in the state.
On Tuesday, the Manipur Director General of Police (DGP) visited Churachandpur district. During this, he inaugurated the new conference room of the Superintendent of Police office and reviewed the security situation with the police and other security forces deployed in the district. The DGP also interacted with representatives of local civil organizations and heard their concerns.
