Manipur Erupts Again: Imphal Boils Over Arambai Tenggol Leader’s Arrest

National News: The long-standing unrest in Manipur is once again in spate. On Sunday, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) arrested Aseem Kanan Singh, a prominent leader of the Arambai Teengol Organization from Imphal Airport. The arrest took place in 2023 cases related to ethnic violence, after which massive protests and violence erupted in the state. Aseem Kanan is accused of alleged criminal involvement during the 2023 violence. The CBI's Anti -Corruption Branch (ACB) arrested him under the ongoing investigation under the Supreme Court's directive. After the arrest, Kanan was transferred directly from Imphal to Guwahati.

Protests and violence

As soon as the news of the arrest spread, protests erupted in many districts of the valley including Imphal. The protesters burnt tires on the roads, jammed the roads and pelted stones at the security forces. Police used tear gas, rubber bullet and mock bomb to handle the situation. During this period, 11 people were injured, including a 13 -year -old boy who was seriously injured by tear gas shells.

Internet services banned 

The state government has banned Internet services in Imphal East, Imphal West, Thobbal, Kakching and Bishnupur districts for five days. The gathering of people under section 144 in the valley area has been banned. A large number of security forces have been deployed in major areas and high alerts have been issued in the entire area.

Political parties meet the governor

Meanwhile, more than 25 MLAs and Rajya Sabha MP from several political parties including BJP, Congress, NPP met Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla. He expressed concern over the deteriorating situation in the state and demanded immediate release of the other four Arabai Teengol members arrested.

The statement issued by Raj Bhavan said that the Governor has assured the delegation that every effort is being made for restoration of peace. He also clarified that the administration is not against the Arambai Teengol organization and the organization also collaborated in relief operations during the recent floods.

Different reactions between BJP and Congress

BJP MLA L. Ibomcha said that Asim Kanan has been arrested by the CBI in a special case, while four other members have been detained by the local police. If no criminal background is found in their investigation, they will be released soon.

At the same time, Congress MLA Okram Surja Kumar said that after the arrest, anarchy has spread throughout the state. Internet is closed, people are afraid and the atmosphere is extremely stressful. He said that at this time all political parties should unite and work towards restoration of peace.

Governor's security meeting and review of the situation

Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla convened a high -level security review meeting at Raj Bhavan, which included DGP, ADGP, IG CRPF and other senior officials. The meeting reviewed the current law and order situation and steps being taken to maintain peace.

Congress targeted central government

Congress leaders Jairam Ramesh and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra have launched a scathing attack on the central government regarding the position of Manipur. Jairam Ramesh said that violence has spread in districts like Imphal, Thobal, Kakching and Bishnupur and the central government remains silent spectators. Priyanka Gandhi raised the question that when there is a situation like President's rule in the state, why is the violence not being controlled?

Manipur has once again reached a sensitive turn. The arrest of the Arambai Teengol leader has once again given air to instability and unrest in the state. Now the biggest challenge before the Governor, Administration and political parties is to restore peace and re -establish people's trust.
