Srinagar: People's Democratic Party (PDP) chief Mehbooba Mufti has been placed under house arrest ahead of Martyrs' Day celebrations on July 13 in Srinagar, her daughter claimed on Sunday. A political controversy has erupted in Jammu and Kashmir after PDP leader Iltija Mufti claimed she was placed under house arrest ahead of Martyrs' Day.
PDP leader Iltija Mufti on Sunday alleged that she and her mother, party chief Mehbooba Mufti, were placed under house arrest ahead of Martyrs' Day on July 13.
While sharing a video on X, she wrote, "We have been placed under house arrest on the eve of Martyrs Day for reasons best know to JK Police. This is the normalcy they claim to have established in Kashmir? Make no mistake the local government too is hand in glove using police in Sidhra to demolish homes & place opponents in detention when convenient."
July 13 is celebrated as Martyrs' Day in Jammu and Kashmir. This day is celebrated in the memory of 22 people who were killed in the firing by the Dogra Army outside the Central Jail of Srinagar in the year 1931.
However, in 2020, the Lieutenant Governor's administration removed this day from the list of gazetted holidays. Iltija targeted the administration, alleging, "This is the normalcy they claim to have established in Kashmir? Make no mistake the local government too is hand in glove using police in Sidhra to demolish homes and place opponents in detention when convenient."
In the video sharted by Iltija, several policemen can be seen standing outside Mehbooba Mufti's home. A woman is also seen talking with the policemen. A white Scorpio car is also seen parked outside the house.
