New Delhi: After the recent terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, tensions between India and Pakistan are constantly increasing. After this attack, the Indian government has made it clear that it will give a befitting reply. As part of this strategy, a big mock drill (security exercise) is being organized across the country on May 7, which is being conducted on such a large scale for the first time since 1971.
The purpose of this mock drill is to inform citizens about the precautions to be taken and the rescue measures to be followed in case of any possible war or terrorist attack. According to the information given by the Home Ministry, this drill will be conducted simultaneously in 259 districts of the country. Preparations have started in these districts from May 6 itself. Security agencies, Civil Defense, NDRF, SDRF, Railways, and Air Defense departments have been included.
There will be a blackout during the drill, meaning the lights of all homes, offices, and public places will be switched off. Also, sirens will sound to warn of an air raid. On hearing the siren, people will have to immediately move to safer places. During this time, they will also be given necessary information related to self-defense and disaster management.
In this mock drill, people will be taught how to protect themselves and their loved ones with peace and restraint in case of a war or terrorist attack. Special training will be given to security forces and civilians deployed in border areas. A high-level meeting was held in the Home Ministry on May 6 regarding the preparations for the mock drill, in which DG NDRF, DG Home Guard, DG Fire Services, as well as senior officials of Railways and the Air Force, participated. SDRF has already started preparations at other sensitive places, including Srinagar.
The major districts included in the drill are cities like Delhi, Patna, Katihar, Guwahati, Bhubaneswar, Jaipur, Ludhiana, Chandigarh, Amritsar, Gorakhpur, Barmer, Jaisalmer, Pune, Hyderabad, Port Blair, Visakhapatnam, Dibrugarh, Ganganagar, Koraput, Ajmer, and Udaipur. This unprecedented mock drill will not only increase the awareness of the common citizens but will also give the security agencies an opportunity to test their preparedness. This step of the government is being considered an important effort in terms of national security.
