The monsoon is advancing rapidly across India, bringing widespread rain to several regions. This year, it has arrived earlier than usual, leading to heavy showers in states like Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued warnings for heavy to very heavy rainfall in many parts of the country.
According to IMD, the southwest monsoon has already spread into parts of Bihar, eastern and western Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and even parts of Ladakh. In the coming days, areas like Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, and Odisha are expected to receive heavy to very heavy rainfall. Between June 20 and 26, intense rain is likely in regions such as Konkan, Goa, Maharashtra, and Gujarat.
Several areas across northeastern India, including Assam, Meghalaya, and Arunachal Pradesh, will continue to receive heavy rainfall throughout the week. Bihar, Jharkhand, and eastern Madhya Pradesh may also experience significant downpours during this time. IMD has also predicted thunderstorms and strong winds (40–60 km/h) in many states including West Bengal, Odisha, Tamil Nadu, and Kerala.
The IMD has confirmed that the current weather conditions are favorable for the monsoon to spread further. In the next two days, the monsoon is likely to reach the remaining parts of Rajasthan, western Uttar Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Jammu & Kashmir, Ladakh, and even Delhi. It is expected to hit Delhi as early as June 22, ahead of its normal schedule of June 30.
The weather department has issued a yellow alert for heavy rainfall in Uttarakhand between June 21 and 24, and an orange alert for June 22. Districts such as Dehradun, Nainital, Almora, and Pithoragarh are likely to witness intense rain. With favorable conditions, the entire country is expected to receive monsoon rainfall earlier than usual this year.
